Russ is a pastoral crisis marriage counselor and Director of Pastoral Training and Church Development at Hope for the Hurting Home. He has a contagious passion to help churches change the culture of divorce in America, one marriage at a time. His education includes a D. Min. from Bethel University in Congregational Care and Marriage Ministry and an M.A. in Educational Ministry from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. He was former senior pastor of the Grove Church (Maple Grove EFC) for 21 years. In 2010 he was a lead member on the Crisis Marriages in Faith Communities Project (a collaborative think tank with the MN Couples on the Brink Project, the Uni. Of MN, and area clergy and counselors) which developed a new divorce intervention protocol called Faith Based Discernment Counseling. His doctoral dissertation focused on the first ever pastoral training in divorce intervention with a six month follow up study conducted with pastoral staff in the Twin Cities. Since 2012, he has worked with over 450 couples at risk of divorce and provided training for more than 400 pastors, counselors, therapists, marriage mentors and lay leaders in this innovative method of working with mixed agenda crisis marriages. Russ has been married to Melody for 45 years. They have two married daughters and 5 grandchildren living in the northwest suburbs of Minneapolis. He enjoys date nights with Melody, wrestling with grandkids, biking, golf in the worst way (literally) and camping.
